Example of How PnP Works Empty Example of How PnP Works

Post by Acedia Fri May 27, 2016 7:34 pm

So as some of you may recall, I used to play a bit of Pathfinder online, so I know how PnP works, but many of you haven't really been exposed to it. Although I did it in a private forum, there are many examples of PnP being popularized. Many of you may have frequented the Giant in the Playground's forum for Homebrew or game advice, but you may not have been aware that they also have an extremely popular PnP section as well. So without further ado, I would like to use an example from one of my private forum games to post onto here, giving you an idea as to how it plays out. Since I am but one person, I will note at the beginning of every post who the would be poster is.

As you talk and take in the view, the cold suddenly deepens, biting through clothing and even the skin of Aasimars. The river begins to churn slightly, and black lines and streaks almost seem to infect it, turning it from a clear river to what almost looks like a veiny arm. Steam begins to spout up as geysers spray boiling water. The nearby soldiers gape, unable to comprehend what could be happening.

    Player 1
Fiona and Atar bolt up from their relaxed position as they spot the sudden, violent change. "This... this thing is like the Worldwound!" Fiona says as she stares at the water. "But our Wardstones... And we're so far from the actual Worldwound!"

"Everyone back away!" Atar shouts out, "Stay together! A powerful demon could be lurking in the waters!"

Fiona starts flying up a short distance and shouts at the boats, motioning toward the shore, "Get off the river! Ground them if you have to! Off the river!"

Thrandia casts Overland Flight as she prepares herself to fight something, "Stand back!" she supports Atar's assertion with her own, taking to the air and casting Arcane Sight to try and discern something about what was going on here.

She immediately cries out and dispells the effect, rubbing her eyes as they scream their protest to everything they were seeing.

On the boat, the pair shot to their feet and immediately went back to back, their weapons drawn. The Undine began to sing, his voice echoing over the clatter of movement on the ship, causing him and his companion to stand taller. (Inspire Greatness on Aven and Mel)

"There’s a day when all hearts will be broken, When a shadow will cast out the light...

The woman on the other hand pressed a hand to her neck as black wings unfurled between her and the Undine, and in an instant was covered in a powerful looking set of Full Plate, her longsword drawn and tower shield ready.

As you all watch the water intensely, chaos begins to spread among the ranks of the arriving crusaders, many of those still on the ship attempting to get onto shore as quickly as they can.

Suddenly, the bubbling of the water increases dramatically, the geysers shooting up even higher sprays of boiling, fouled black water. The ship the Crusaders arrived on pitches back and forth dramatically, and suddenly, with a great heave, the entire galleon is flipped up onto the bank. The ship splinters and crashes into hundreds of pieces, and the troops are flung about, many of them injured. Aven manages to land relatively safely, being only barely hurt (8 damage), while Mel easily evades any injury with her wings.

Rising up from where the ship once settled, arises...this.

The worm is bloated, and steam comes from much of it's surface. It's eyes are a psychotic, bright yellow. Whipping it's head about, it looks down on the stunned Crusaders, obviously hungry.

Out from the water, a horde of strange, gilled Dretches rise out, seemingly intent on slaughter. At their head leads a a great, scaled beast, it's roar reaching even the distant towers.

    Init

Michael, Aven+Mel, Thrandia, Therand, Scaled Demon, Worm, Fiona+Atar, Vayne, Crusaders, Dretches

(The worm is about 400 ft away, the dretches haven't quite reached the shore yet but are heading for the beached Crusaders, who are about 250 ft away)

Fiona looks onward at the creature in shock. She starts shouting out, "It's not a demon! It's some sort of Beast of Chaos!" She motions toward the Crusaders, "I'm Captain Melchiott! We are defending this position until reinforcements arrive! Prepare yourself to take down the dretches, but stay together! Those with expert magic or ranged abilities, take aim at the beast!"

"That's... a big boy." Michael gapes at the Purple Worm. He activates his judgements for Protection and Justice (+3 AC and +3 attack) before taking pot shots at the massive creature.

    (12+24 = 36 first shot
    17 + 19 = 36 Second Shot)

    (Hp Rolls from Inspire Greatness:

Aven 8+6 con bonus = 14 temp hp added
Melisandre 15+8 con bonus = 23 temp hp added )

Landing next to the bard, the woman fell into a ready stance. "Rally to me Crusaders!" the bard shouted in between verses, notching a couple of arrows and letting them loose at the Dretches.

    (First Attack: 11+26 = 37 To Hit, Damage = 8+12 = 20
    Second Attack Crit Damage 3 + 12 = 15, 30 if crit confirmed.

The two arrows find their way into a dretch, dropping it back into the black water with a slimy splash.
